Celebrating achievements of youths in Asia

August 12th, 2021

As the pandemic continues in Asia, children and youth continue to be widely affected. With the delay of their education and many being orphaned due to their guardians being sick, this leaves less hope for children and their future. However, many continue to persevere and continue to make a change in their communities.

In Terre des Hommes Netherlands, we had witnessed many youth advocates continuing to spread awareness about child rights despite the pandemic whether virtually or in-person (if safe and possible). For International Youth Day in 2021, TDH wants to celebrate these young leaders - especially their achievements during these difficult times.

Despite their limited capacity, many children and youth use available resources to continue their education and advocacy through TDHNL’s partners and staff. Here are a collection of stories from the field;

  • Using skills gained from vlogging and creative writing had prepared Catherine Harry and training TDHNL staff in how to communicate taboo topics to children and youth
  • To get people’s attention on the issue of rising child marriages during the pandemic, Terre des Hommes Netherlands’ IMAGE project displayed wall paintings in villages in Karnataka, India.
  • Children and youth using online platforms to share positive messages and tips about how to stay safe from online exploitation
  • Rangoli/Kolam design is an art form practiced in India, where people (mostly women) use coloured rice powder and design intricate patterns on the ground during festivals, celebrations, or sometimes even as a daily ritual. This was used by children and youth to spread awareness about COVID-19 and domestic violence

How Terre des Hommes Netherlands are working with children and youth

  • Formation of child clubs at the community level
  • Encouraging potential young leaders to be youth advocates, changemakers, and agents of change through our partner organisations
  • Counselling and consulting with children to discuss how to better support and protect them either through educational workshops, mobile apps, services, and skills training
