Looking back at one year of Girls Advocacy Alliance

In 2016, the five-year program of the Girls Advocacy Alliance (GAA) began. In the Girls Advocacy Alliance, Terre des Hommes works with the organisations Plan Netherlands and Defence for Children – ECPAT to eliminate violence against girls and young women and to strengthen their economic chances in society through lobbying and advocacy.

Thai boy demands compensation from the American who abused him

A Thai boy has demanded compensation for an American court from the American who abused him in Thailand. The compensation is granted. The boy, Tima, gets 25,000 dollars. The 54-year-old American teacher from Alabama is sentenced to 27 years in prison for producing and possessing child pornography. He used to travel to South East Asia for the purpose of abusing children.

In 2016, Terre des Hommes Netherlands helped 21,413 children in our four East African focus countries Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. One in five was a victim of child exploitation: 1,374 children were rescued from child trafficking, 374 children were withdrawn from sexual exploitation, 2,156 were saved from child abuse, and 416 were helped to stop with child labour.

In 2016, as a result from Terre des Hommes Netherlands’ combating sexual exploitation of children programme in India, at least 38 parents from eight villages decided not to include their young girls in Devadasi system and allow them to go back to school.

The annual report of 2016 is finalised. It was a special year: that of our fiftieth anniversary. This anniversary causes mixed feelings. On one hand we are thankful for the trust and support we have been receiving from donors and others for so long. On the other hand however, it is quite confrontational to realise that our work is still needed.

Dutchman arrested for abuse of 6-year-old Cambodian girl

A 42-year-old man from the Dutch city Rotterdam was arrested in Cambodia this week on suspicion of repeatedly abusing a six-year-old Cambodian girl. Terre des Hommes’ local partner was tipped off about the possible abuse and within a week helped the mother save her daughter.

Often referred to as ‘sextortion’ or ‘webcam blackmailing’, the online coercion and extortion of children, a form of digital blackmail where sexual information or images are used to extort sexual material, sexual favours or money, has skyrocketed in the past years, but remains largely underreported.
