750.000 men searching online…

Webcam child sex tourism is booming: this relatively new phenomenon involves (mostly Western) men who offer children money to perform sexual acts in front of the webcam. At any time of the day, an estimated 750.000 men are looking for online webcam sex with children. Webcam child sex tourism is growing rapidly. If nothing is done, it is expected to develop into a persistent, global industry.

Using the fictional character Sweetie, Terre des Hommes unmasked over 1,000 offenders of webcam sex with children in just two months. Thanks to the 10-year-old virtual Filipino girl, named Sweetie, Terre des Hommes has put webcam child sex tourism on the worldwide map. Moreover, Sweetie shows how to track online sex offenders using modern technology. The outcome of our research was shocking.

Our goal!

This massive campaign was a huge success for Terre des Hommes. It was our objective to raise international awareness for 'webcam child sex tourism' and to plead for a new pro-active way of tracking online child sex abusers. It is an understatement to say that we succeeded. Recently, the United Nations has put the subject on the agenda of the Human Rights Commission. Immediately after completion of the investigation, Terre des Hommes handed over all the information gathered to the appropriate authorities. Meanwhile a first arrest was already made in Australia.

What did we achieve?

'Sweetie' receives unprecedented media attention when we reveal the girl's virtual character in November 2013. More than 1 billion people worldwide have learned about Sweetie through hundreds of media, and were introduced to the subject of webcam child sex tourism as a result.

  • Over 4 million people have watched the Sweetie video on YouTube

  • Nearly 500.000 people have signed the petition aimed to put pressure on governments and persuade them to actually protect children from this form of sexual exploitation

  • Webcam child sex tourism was on the agenda of the UN Human Rights Commission on 12 March last

  • Police experts have approached Terre des Hommes with questions regarding the method of investigation

  • Both politicians and police experts in the Philippines call for action against this crime

  • The first arrests have meanwhile taken place in Australia and Poland

  • Dutch Maud de Boer-Buquicchio, who was appointed as UN Special Rapporteur on child trafficking, child prostitution and child pornography by the chairman of the UN Human Rights Council, advocates webcam child sex tourism to be treated as top priority

  • Sweetie wins many advertising awards including Golden Lamps and a Grand Prix. Terre des Hommes has been pronounced advertiser of the year by the Stichting Adverteerdersjury Nederland (SAN). On top of that, Sweetie and Lemz advertising agency took home two more SAN awards in other categories. Sweetie also won the ‘Tomorrow Award’ in Miami for using impressive innovative technology in a campaign. In England too, Sweetie was awarded by a professional jury with three prizes (white, yellow, and black pencil).
