Today the campaign of Samenwerkende Hulporganisaties (co-operating aid organisations) for the victims of the earthquake and tsunami on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi kicks off.  You can make your donation on the website of Giro 555.

Terre des Hommes itself is not active in the disaster area, but supports the efforts of the other aid organisations. Giro 555 is a co-operation of 12 aid organisations.

1.5 million people affected

So far, the disaster cost 1,200 lives since Friday, almost 50,000 people are displaced and up to 1.5 million people were affected by the disaster. The number of victims is expected to rise over the coming days, because many areas are inaccessible at the moment.

"The combination of a tsunami, earthquakes and mudslides devastated the area", says Marinus Verweij, Giro555 campaign leader. "They still are removing people from the rubble and there is an urgent need for drinking water, medical supplies and shelter. As Samenwerkende Hulporganisaties we join hands to assist."

Urgent need for drinking water, medical supplies and shelter

The aid organisations behind Giro555 are either present in the area themselves, or through local partners. They offer immediate emergency aid, such as shelter, food, tents, blankets, hygiene packages, medical aid and drinking water. Apart from this, the aid workers also focus on searching for victims in the rubble and protecting children. Various aid organisations have sent special teams to the area to survey the needs.

The Netherlands helps Sulawesi (Indonesia)

As of today, fund-raising commercials are broadcast on radio, television and social media. In the coming weeks fund-raising campaigns to help the victims in Indonesia will kick off throughout The Netherlands. Giro555 calls upon everybody in the country, including schools, companies and sports clubs, to donate to save as many lives as possible.
