Child Exploitation Situational Analysis in Cambodia 2023
Terre des Hommes Netherlands has conducted an in-depth Situational Analysis of Child Exploitation in Cambodia anno 2023. This initiative was taken in the context of our new Listen Up! 2023-2030 Strategy which puts an emphasis on our organisation becoming a catalyst for systemic change.
About the Research
The research was implemented by a team of researchers with expertise in issues related to child protection in the context of Cambodia. The fieldwork was conducted during April and May 2023 and in June we organised a Validation Workshop where the results were discussed with the government, law enforcement authorities and other CSOs. The final report was completed by the team at the end of July.
The main findings of the report are :
1. SEXUAL EXPLOITATION OF CHILDREN IN TRAVEL AND TOURISM
There exists a risk for children, especially in travel, tourism and entertainment sectors due to a lack of regulation. Exploitation has shifted from offline to online.
2. CHILD TRAFFICKING AND MIGRATION
Children above 10 are left behind with their grandmothers who in most cases are not able to take care of them. Children under 10 migrate with their parents and live in terrible conditions, increasing their risks of health issues and exploitation. There is a reduction in begging but still exists in cities and slums.
3. OTHER FORMS OF EXPLOITATION
Children in conflict with the law face exploitation in detention centres. Poor migrant children who live on the street are highly vulnerable.
Through this report, we wish to work towards developing collective solutions addressing the most pressing issues affecting children in Cambodia. We will take this forward by developing legislations, policies and guidelines along with strengthening existing systems.
