Staying at home is dangerous for Emelda

June 22nd, 2020

Staying at home is dangerous for Emelda: when she goes home, she will get mutilated. Vulnerable children, like Emelda, are at risk worldwide due to the corona crisis. They cannot go to school and therefore miss their safe place.

Vulnerable children, like Emelda, are at risk worldwide due to the corona crisis.

Many parents cannot work and poverty is increasing. This makes these children even more vulnerable to exploitation. The consequences are alarming. Sexual exploitation is increasing, including children exploited for webcam sex. Or, like Emelda, they run the risk of genital mutilation.

That is why we are sounding the alarm for these children. They urgently need protection during this difficult time.

Terre des Hommes takes action:

  1. We educate parents and children about the risks children are currently running and how to prevent them from becoming victims of exploitation. But also about how they can prevent infection with the corona virus.
  2. We provide humanitarian relief to families and children in acute need. For example with food packages and hygiene items.
  3. We ensure that we remain findable and accessible to children in trouble by setting up help lines via telephone and internet.
