Corona dossier - our response

May 12th, 2021

Vulnerable children are at risk worldwide due to the corona crisis. They cannot go to school and therefore miss their safe place. Many parents cannot work and poverty is increasing. This makes these children even more vulnerable to exploitation. The consequences are alarming.

The economic stress and disruption to education resulting from the corona outbreak is increasing the cases of abuse, exploitation and violence against children.

Children in the most vulnerable situations are less able to protect themselves from corona. Closure or inaccessibility of basic services for vulnerable children, stigmatization, exploitation and sexual abuse due to school closings are real threats putting in risk those children most in need.

That is why we are sounding the alarm for these children. They urgently need protection during this difficult time.

How is Terre des Hommes helping children?

Children’s safety is our first concern. We’re implementing new measures to ensure the wellbeing and protection of all children and their communities in our projects.

1. With humanitarian relief

The corona outbreak is quickly changing the context in which children live all over the world. In addition to health issues, social and economic disruptions caused by the pandemic present risks to children’s well-being and protection. TdH is rapidly responding to these needs by providing hygiene kits, food and cash transfers to those most in need.

4. With children’s education

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a widespread crisis, affecting all walks of life. India is currently under a national lockdown till 3rd May 2020. In this context, children’s education has taken a mighty blow, specifically in rural areas across India, which do not have access to digital learning facilities at home.

Together we can help

Corona measures affect how children grow and develop. Reduced parental supervision, changes in family structure and loss of income can mean that children’s basic needs are not met so they are more vulnerable to exploitation and abuse.

Worldwide, child exploitation is increasing as a result of the corona crisis because home is not the safe place it should be.

Because children can’t wait, we can’t stop. No threat will stop us. We will continue this fight until our work is accomplished.
