Lockdown, curfew and school closures: in 2021 the COVID-19 pandemic still had the world in its grip. This was also noticed by children and young people in the many project countries where Terre des Hommes is active. The increasing poverty caused by the economic consequences of the pandemic made them even more vulnerable to exploitation. And so there was work to be done for Terre des Hommes. Despite the many challenges and obstacles, we were able to help many children again this year.
Thanks to all the great support, we were able to achieve great results again in 2021. In this way 4,490 children can go back to school, and Terre des Hommes succeeded in getting children like Benjamin (12) from Uganda off the streets and giving them a safe future. In Kenya we protected 150 children against sexual abuse: they received shelter, medicines, legal support and education.
In India we prevented 178 child marriages, which we do together with girls like Nayana (17), who know what it is like to be a victim. This has resulted in a movement of more than 15,000 girls standing up for themselves and others around them! Your help was also essential in 2021 for 11-year-old Riya and all the other children who had to do dangerous work in the mica mines in India. Terre des Hommes also contributed to 10 emergency relief operations, in which nearly 5,000 children received psychosocial help.
Thanks to all of the support, Terre des Hommes can once again in 2022 commit to the children who desperately need our help.
