Purpose, fun part and challenges of this role

The Intern Child Labour Programme will be able to  use her/his/their skills to last a significant contribution to the expansion of the CL portfolio of projects. She will work in a diverse team and learn how to apply data collection and analysis of the track record and  to suggest meaningful entry points for the design of new programmes connected to the minerals extraction sector.  

The Team

Our team consists of 4 colleagues in The Netherlands and Brussels providing the strategic direction to projects on the ground as well as delivering advocacy, private sector engagement and research in the Netherlands and Brussels; We like to support each other and make sure everyone is comfortable showing strengths but also vulnerabilities. A good sense of humor, also in difficult situations, is a strong characteristic of the team and something that ties us all together. 

Result areas and core activities

To do this you will:

  • Supporting the development and implementation of diverse pieces of research on child labour, especially on interventions to prevent and eliminate CL in the minerals extraction sector.
  • Contributing to desk reviews on Child Labour context analysis and opportunities in selected countries.
  • Supporting the elaboration of the Child Labour Thematic Programme best practices report based on the analysis of previous project reports.
  • Conduct the ethical screening of potential companies interested in partnering with us;
  • Contributing to the development, review and referencing of concept notes, guidelines and other documents related to Child Labour;
  • Co-create a learning and mentorship plan, tailored to suit your interests, needs, knowledge capacity and skills with clear goals against which to review your progress during and at the end of the internship;
  • Participate in regular one-on-one learning & support sessions with the CL HoP, other CL staff members and post-internship reflection meetings;
  • Complete online child safeguarding training, as well as introductory online courses on children’s rights.

Knowledge and experience

The ideal candidate will be committed to the mission and vision of Terre des Hommes Netherlands and has experience in conducting desk research, analysis of data  and is familiar with Child labour/forced labour and/or other social impacts in global supply chains. 

More specifically:

  • Currently enrolled in a BA or MA in a relevant field at a Dutch university.
  • Experience in conducting desk research is required.
  • Primary research skills such as online interviews/surveys are desirable but not essential
  • Exposure and interest in responsible business conduct within global supply chains, especially in minerals extraction/Artisanal and Small Scale mining (ASM)
  • Analytical and conceptual skills.
  • English written communication skills, French is a an asset
  • Basic knowledge of project cycle management in international cooperation is a plus
  • Good organisational skills.
  • Proactive and hands-on attitude.
  • A particular interest in diversity, inclusion and intersectionality would be an added bonus.
  • Preferable starting date 1st September 2025
