Lobby and Expertise Intern on Child Exploitation

Are you passionate about children's rights? Would you like to learn new skills while contributing to our work to end child exploitation? Become an intern at the Lobby and Expertise Team of Terre des Hommes!

About Terre des Hommes

Terre des Hommes Netherlands aims to prevent child exploitation, to remove children from exploitative situations, and to ensure that these children are able to continue their development in a safe environment.

Terre des Hommes Netherlands focuses on Sexual Exploitation of Children (SEC), the Worst Forms of Child Labour, Child Trafficking and Migration, Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR), and on Child Protection in Humanitarian Crisis. For each of these forms of child exploitation, Terre des Hommes Netherlands is developing and implementing projects and programmes through local partners, mainly in Asia and Africa. Terre des Hommes Netherlands also advocates for policy change at the European Union (EU) level and country level for better policies tackling child exploitation.

Goal of this internship

The aim of this internship is to provide a learning environment for an aspiring child rights advocate, while contributing to research, training, tool development and quality assurance of our global programmes to end child exploitation. The specific tasks will be defined in agreement with the intern, and could for instance be related to child labour in supply chains, gender and intersectional dimension of exploitation, online sexual exploitation, or the implementation of respectful terminology towards child victims of sexual abuse and exploitation. If a (thesis) research is a mandatory component of your studies, we are happy to discuss the possibility of combining this with your internship.

We are looking for a motivated and hands-on intern to be a member of the Lobby &  Expertise team. The L&E team consists of 7 advisors with different backgrounds and expertise. The candidate in this role will gain a wide range of knowledge and experience during the months they will be with us, for at least 5 months, either part-time or full-time depending on your school obligations (between 16-36 hours per week).

  • Support collecting information on current topics and best practices and disseminating this within the organisation
  • Support the development of lobby and advocacy initiatives and collaboration with the communications department to develop lobby materials such as lobby letters and campaigns.
  • Support L&E project design tasks, as part of Project Design Teams working closely with staff in HO, Asia and Africa regions and country offices
  • Help answering questions from country team and departments at head office such as communications or fundraising
  • Co-developing and co-facilitating training to staff and partners
  • Performing other duties as may be assigned by your line manager

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Studying towards a Bachelor’s or Master's Degree in child rights, human rights, psychology, international development studies, pedagogy or any other relevant degree
  • Knowledge of child rights, child protection or child exploitation.
  • Knowledge on how to design and implement research: doing desk studies, developing methodologies and writing reports
  • Good organisational skills
  • Good oral and written communication: being able to write clear messages  and present to different audiences
  • Knowledge and/or interest on (one of) our ‘cross-cutting issues’ issues such as child participation, gender, inclusion of children with disabilities and alternative is an advantage
  • Good command of the English language. Good understanding of Dutch is preferable due to the involvement in both English and Dutch programmes, but not required
  • Previous experience at NGOs or children/youth-focused organisations is an advantage but not required

What do we offer?

  • An inspiring and challenging internship in which you can learn a lot and get responsibility to implement your own tasks (under supervision of technical advisors)
  • Period: minimum of 5 months, 16-36 hours per week
  • Many very knowledgeable and driven international colleagues
  • An internship allowance (€400 per month based on 36 hours per week). Please note that you need to be registered with a University (BA or MA programme) in order to receive this allowance
  • A balance between working at our office at one of the nicest squares in The Hague and working from home
